Stuart Discothèque,[1] generally known as Disco Stu, is the owner of Stu's Disco. He is a disco aficionado and is usually featured wearing a rhinestone-encrusted leisure suit. He often refers to himself in the third person (putting a big emphasis on "Stu" and then pausing before saying anything else).

History

Before becoming a fan of disco, Stu was known as Nautical Stu due to his career as a Sea Captain, before giving it up for his disco.

Stu visited the neighborhood yard sale and turned down the chance to buy Homer's "Disco Stu" jacket. He has also been seen with dead goldfish in his platform shoes, hitting on Marge Simpson at a ski lodge (until he finds out she has children), dancing with Homer after Homer discovers his love of walking, getting smashed by a jukebox thanks to a beefed up Marge, and most recently, a regular on Homer's talk show. During a "taxi cab confession", Disco Stu revealed that he's aware disco is dead, and that he does not even like it anymore.[2] He expresses worry that he has let disco define him as a person and fears becoming a "one note guy".

Stu runs his own nightclub and tried to start a franchise chain.

Religion and Relationships

Disco Stu got his marriage annulled by Pope John Paul II,[3] revealing that he is of the Catholic faith. He has been lucky with the ladies. He has dated Edna Krabappel,[4] and Luann Van Houten,[5] and was seen at an Absolut Krusty party with both Lindsey Naegle and Cookie Kwan.[6] Stu also seems to have an attraction to the Bouvier sisters, but with less success:

He was once married to Selma.[3] Selma later tried to rekindle the relationship with Stu after her smoking relapse. At first Stu told her he was over her (despite the photos and artwork of her all over his house), but he apparently consented to at least a fling as he and Selma got together in her apartment after Patty left. When Patty returned, the sisters reconciled and Selma stated she had made a few mistakes while Patty was gone. At that point, Stu walked out of her bedroom while buttoning up his shirt and sadly said, "You said it was serious this time."[7]

He once found himself attracted to Marge, and put some moves on her in a ski lodge. However, he beat a hasty retreat when he learned she had kids.[8]

Disco Stu had a profile on the gay dating app, U.S. Male Service. In the video on the app, he said that he was hetero-flexible. However, Waylon Smithers thought that he was just going through a phase.[9]

Non-canon

Disco Stu has also appeared as "Discus Stu" in a parody of the Odyssey. He was "Disco Shrew" in the "Treehouse of Horror XIII" parody of The Island of Dr. Moreau, where Stu was turned into a shrew, but wasn't worried about his condition.

Stu appears as "Big Band Stu" in the parody of The War of the Worlds radio panic that takes place in 1938, in "Treehouse of Horror XVII". Big Band Stu's grave appears in "Looking for Mr. Goodbart".

Disco Stu was once dating one of the nurses at Springfield Retirement Castle. However, they broke up when Bart, Grampa, Jasper and the Old Jewish man pranked her, making her look old.[10]

Selma revealed that she's actually Marge's mother and not her sister, but right before she could finish saying who her father is (who is Disco Stu), she passed away.[11]

Behind the Laughter

Although originally created as a throwaway gag character, Stu ended up being brought back again and again. He was originally going to be voiced by Phil Hartman in the episode "Two Bad Neighbors", but when the animators needed to do a model change, Phil wasn't available to redub the voice, so Hank Azaria took it over. Disco Stu is now shown in the HD opening sequence along with many other characters that have debuted from the start of the series to season 20.
