Synopsis[edit]

"When Brandine accidentally reveals that she is educated at a book club meetup, news of her intelligence spreads, and Cletus feels betrayed. Believing Brandine is no longer the woman he fell in love with, Cletus breaks up with her. Meanwhile, Lisa is inducted into the League of Extraordinary Geniuses at Springfield Elementary."

Plot[edit]

Homer watches Million Dollar Li$ting: Springfield on TV, where buyers are interested in purchasing Burns' manor, while drinking beer. Marge approaches and invites him to go to Moe's that evening while she hosts her book club. At the book club, while most attendees complain about how boring the book was, Brandine surprises everyone by revealing a higher level of intelligence than expected, shocking the group.

The next morning, at the First Church of Springfield and the fishing shack, word begins to spread. Agnes shows Cletus Brandine's Old Springfield Library card, and he learns of her intellect. Meanwhile, at school, Lisa presents a report to Miss Hoover on how men have historically received credit for women's scientific work. After confronting the teacher, she is scolded and sent back to her seat. Two students pass a note implying Lisa is "one of them."

At Cletus's farm, Cletus confronts Brandine, who confirms the truth. After a tornado dropped books near her, she began reading, watching ballet, and completing her self-education at the Springfield Athenaeum. Cletus, feeling she is no longer the woman he fell in love with, breaks up with her. Their children, not wanting a changed lifestyle, also leave her. Brandine takes refuge at the Simpson House.

At Swapper Jack's, after Marge receives a reality check from others about how she could have married someone better than Homer, Brandine recounts how she met Cletus at her sister's wedding while sitting on the same hay bale. Meanwhile, at school, Lisa is bullied, but the mysterious kids who passed the note help her escape and introduce her to the "League of Extraordinary Geniuses." Lisa nearly exposes their hideout, but they repel the bullies with a clever trick.

At the Simpson dinner table, Brandine expresses her desire to return to her children. Bart and Lisa share their school day stories, which make Brandine cry. Later in bed, Marge tells Homer how others in town view their marriage and urges him to talk to Cletus, which only makes Homer worry more about both their relationships. Brandine eventually decides she can't stay away and wants to return home. She also advises Lisa not to hide her intelligence at a young age.

Brandine decides to leave her new life and return to the farm. Lisa convinces the League of Extraordinary Geniuses to reveal their identities, declaring themselves as "Smartacus," with each member following suit. At the farm, Brandine is welcomed back by her children, and Cletus surprises her by revealing that he's decided to change as well—arriving with a library card and a book.

Back home, Marge finds that Homer has fixed up parts of the house to show he's changed, even arranging for Elton John and The Beatles—played by Lenny, Moe, Sam, Barney, and Carl—to perform. In the end, Cletus presents his snow sculpture installation: Cletus on Books.
