It originally aired on March 13, 2022. The episode was written by Christine Nangle and directed by Jennifer Moeller. It guest stars Kumail Nanjiani as Theo and Jay Pharoah as Drederick Tatum.
Synopsis[edit]
- When Homer is erroneously blamed for leaving Santa's Little Helper locked in a hot car, footage of the incident goes viral, outraging all of Springfield and making Homer a pariah. He then joins The Institute, an institute created to help people redeem themselves in the public eye.
Plot[edit]
At home, Marge hurries the family through breakfast as Raphael delivers a vacuum cleaner for her to test. She rushes everyone out of the house, including the dog. Homer takes the kids to the Springfield Dog Park, but they want to go to the Boing-a-Torium Trampoline Park instead, leaving him and Santa's Little Helper alone.
When Santa's Little Helper helps Homer avoid joining a dog club with Lenny, Homer brings him to Dairy Girls Ice Cream, leaving him in the car. The dog moves around inside, closing the windows and removing the car keys. A crowd gathers around the car, noticing the situation, and when Homer exits the shop, the people attack him, believing he locked the dog in the hot car.
The situation escalates when he accidentally locks a fireman's dalmatian in a fire truck. The kids return injured, saying he forgot to pick them up. Photos of Homer spread on NeighborHub and make the news. Meanwhile, Marge admires the cleaning results from the vacuum but sees the news when trying to post her own pictures.
Homer insists the situation will blow over, but it worsens at church. Lisa writes a speech for him, but he mocks the congregation instead and accidentally pushes Reverend Lovejoy out of a stained-glass window, injures Lenny's dog, and enrages the crowd further. The backlash spreads on Instasnap, goes viral, and Mr. Burns cuts ties with him.
Homer is banned from Moe's and Krusty Burger. Three weeks later, he finds himself alone at home and discovers Dead Lobster is hosting a Prawn-a-thon. Realizing the family didn't invite him, he goes to confront them at the restaurant. There, he meets Theo, who offers help through The Institute, which he founded to help people redeem themselves.
At the Institute, Homer meets Helen Lovejoy, Councilman Jed Hawk, Larry Doogan, and Kirk Van Houten, who are also seeking redemption. Theo proposes they perform public acts of charity to improve their reputations.
They clean the ocean, plant trees, remove graffiti, and pick up trash, but bullies still throw garbage at them. Theo then suggests a more radical solution: using a universal eradication code to scrub all records of their actions. The code must be uploaded from ChumNet headquarters on ChumNet Island.
They agree and use their learned skills to break into the facility, but once inside, headlines begin to win them over. Homer sees through the manipulation and, as the others get gassed and trapped, he reaches the server room and inserts the flash drive.
Homer discovers that the code would erase not just their records but countless others as well. He stops the process and instead reads Lisa's apology statement aloud to the world, earning forgiveness. Meanwhile, Theo is punished for his failure at the Institute.
Back at Dead Lobster, the family finally has dinner together, enjoying prawns.
