Laura Powers is a teenage girl who lives next door to the Simpsons and is the only child of single-parent divorcee Ruth Powers.

History[edit]

Laura rips out Bart's heart.

After Mr. and Mrs. Winfield moved out of 740 Evergreen Terrace, Ruth and Laura Powers moved in. When Bart and Lisa snuck into the basement of the house to look around, Laura scared Bart, making him fall over. When Bart realized that Laura was beautiful, he wanted to say something clever, but instead said that he fell on his bottom. Marge and Bart later visited the Powers family to welcome them to the neighborhood. Laura politely greeted them at the door, which impressed Marge.

Laura and Bart started hanging out, with Bart asking Laura if she knew various prank techniques. Laura then did a fake palm reading on Bart, telling him that he would be rich in the future before spitting on his hand to symbolize him owning a swimming pool. Bart decided that he would never wash his hand again, which grossed Lisa out. When Homer wanted to go to an all-you-can-eat buffet at The Frying Dutchman, Bart suggested that Laura could babysit them. Bart took a bath and donned a jacket and pipe, à la Hugh Hefner, in an attempt to impress Laura. Laura and the kids ordered food from Two Guys from Kabul before Laura taught them how to waltz. When she was teaching Bart, he had a fantasy sequence of the two of them dancing together.

Bart's feelings for Laura kept developing as they spent more time together. One night, Laura told Bart to meet her at his treehouse. Thinking that Laura might confess her feelings to him, Bart eagerly went to the treehouse. Laura showed up in a red dress, only to reveal that she had a new boyfriend. Heartbroken, Bart imagined Laura ripping his heart out before throwing it into the trash. Bart was then shocked to find that Laura's new boyfriend was Jimbo Jones, one of his bullies. Jimbo then showed up on a bike and took Laura out.

When Homer was in court, Laura babysat for the Simpsons again, this time with Jimbo visiting. Wanting to break Laura and Jimbo up, Bart made a prank call to Moe's Tavern, and told Moe that his name was Jimbo Jones, also giving his address. Moe went straight to the Simpson house and threatened Jimbo with a knife. Jimbo broke down in tears, which made Moe stop and leave. Laura then broke up with Jimbo because he wasn't the guy she thought he was. Laura told Bart that if he was old enough to grow a bad teenage mustache, she'd go out with him in a second. She then gave Bart a kiss on the cheek. After this, the pair prank called Moe again.[1]

Near the end of the Trappuccino incident, Laura was seen throwing rocks at Homer when he returned to Springfield.[2]

Their house was later occupied by a disguised Sideshow Bob.[3] The Powers later moved in again, as in a neighborhood meeting at the Simpson house, Ruth told Marge she hasn't "stopped by to say hello in 25 years, and I live next door".[4]

Personality[edit]

Laura gives Bart a wet willy.

Laura has a tomboyish, laid-back, and quick-witted, charming personality. While outgoing and upbeat, she also displays a great deal of etiquette and manners, which she owes to a strict and rigorous childhood. Her likes include rebellious quasi-thugs, poking dead bodies with a stick, and messing with people's minds. Her favorite restaurant is Two Guys from Kabul. Her biggest thrill is riding the Shriek-o-lator at Duff Gardens. Her dislikes include authority and disco. Her extracurricular activities include babysitting, telling fortunes, and dance instructing. Her secret shame, according to "The Bart Book" and her skybox card, is that she enjoys wearing dresses, despite being a tomboy.

Her foreign travels have forced her to adapt quickly to any situation. She can make herself understood in eight different languages but makes friends through "the universal language of the wedgie." Her claim to fame, apparently, is that she can spit farther than any boy.[5]

Family[edit]

Ruth and Laura's father divorced two years prior to Ruth and Laura moving to Springfield due to him only caring about his career. Laura implies that her father is military, as she says he was stationed in Vandahar.[1]

Description[edit]

"Laura Powers is a tough-talkin', good-lookin' Army brat who can turn a young rebel's heart to mush in the time it takes to give you a Hertz Donut. She speaks politely to adults when necessary, teaches cats to waltz, and makes even belches seem alluring. After just one look and a couple of Wet Willies, Bart makes the ultimate sacrifice for her - he takes a bath.[6]"
