Abraham Lincoln (or "Honest Abe"), known to Homer as Mr. Pennyface,[1] was the 16th President of the United States. He was in office from 1861 to 1865 (during the American Civil War) and was assassinated a month after the start of his second term.

History

In 1860, Mabel Simpson was trying to get Virgil to Canada. Along the way, Mabel saw herself and Virgil on a "MISSING" poster, and figured that they would most definitely be found because of Mabel's large hair. They then happened on Abraham Lincoln in the road, and when he saw their problem, Lincoln said she could wear his tall hat to hide her hair. When Mabel put it on, she asked how she looked. Lincoln said that she looked like a pot-bellied stove, and Mabel gave him a dirty look. Lincoln then defended himself by saying "Hey, hey. Honest Abe."[2]

Mabel and Virgil made their getaway to Canada, married and later had a child, Abraham Simpson I, who Grampa said was named after Abraham Lincoln. Since Lincoln's timely assistance made it possible for Mabel and Virgil to marry and have children, this may well be true.[2]

When the Simpson family was chosen to appear on the reality television show The 1895 Challenge, Homer lamented that in 1895 it would be too late to save Lincoln, but too soon to save McKinley (who was also assassinated).[3] Homer once dreamed that he did save Lincoln from being killed when he knocked down John Wilkes Booth.[4]

There has also been a Kissing Lincolns Coin. It was the result of a minting mistake, which resulted in two images of Lincoln's face being placed on the same side of the coin, facing each other so they looked like they were kissing.[5]

Lincoln was portrayed by Milhouse Van Houten in Springfield Elementary School's Presidents' Day Pageant. The scene with Lincoln featured his death at the hands of John Wilkes Booth, who was played by Bart Simpson. Bart, however, saw an opportunity for mischief and played the role as the Terminator, saying "Hasta la vista, Abey" as he shot Milhouse with a Ping-Pong ball gun.[6]

In an Itchy & Scratchy cartoon, Lincoln's statue was depicted coming to life and taking part in the action. The statue pulled Scratchy's head off, then used an uprooted fencepost to hit Scratchy's head like a baseball and send it flying through the air.[7]

When Superintendent Chalmers showed Bart an illustration depicting all of the U.S. Presidents, Lincoln was one of the few that Bart could identify, referring to him as "five-dollar bill guy".[8]
