Joseph "Joe" Quimby, Sr., formerly Joseph O'Shaughnessy[1], was the father of Mayor of Springfield "Diamond Joe" Quimby. He was also the late husband of Rose Quimby and paternal grandfather of Freddy Quimby and Maria Quimby.
History[edit]
One hundred years ago in Quimby, Ireland, Joe O'Shaughnessy stole the turnip that his mother had found for their dinner. As his family chased him, Joe boarded a ship bound for Springfield. When he arrived in Springfield, his name was changed to Joe Quimby.
Joe had a rough life at first due to the Irish being persecuted. In 1929, he and Iggy Wiggum worked together scavenging through horse leavings for coins and buttons. He and Iggy also got attacked by local bullies. When Quimby saw Rigatoni Spanucci, he decided to ask him for a job at the Spanucci Barrelworks. However, he was laughed at then knocked down the stairs in a barrel. Quimby decided to get revenge on Spanucci by making him a corned beef sandwich, which he then shoved down his throat, choking him to death. Quimby left a fake will on his person that said he left his company to his friend Joe Quimby.
After obtaining the Barrelworks, Quimby Sr. became bigger and more popular. He started his own movie studio, which produced a barrel-based musical, Over the Falls. However, Quimby really wanted to get into politics. When he told the news he was thinking of running for city council, everyone laughed at him and he was told to know his place because he was Irish. Quimby then found out that his wife was in labor and his son, Joe Quimby, was born. Quimby Sr. told baby Joe that he wanted him to succeed where he couldn't.[1]
He was shown in newsreel footage from the News on Parade Corporation News when he received a plaque after Springfield was declared one of America's 400 fastest growing cities.[2]
In the 1980s, Joe Quimby II ran for mayor of Springfield, with his father serving as his right-hand man. When his son got married to Beatrice Bouvier, he told his son that he would have to be seen with mistresses to keep his image intact. Joe Quimby II agreed to do so, which caused Beatrice to leave him. When Quimby ran for governor, he used his speech to apologize to Beatrice and tell her that he loved her. Seeing Quimby throw away the image he had built for him caused Joe Quimby Sr. to suffer a heart attack. He died in hospital after telling his son that he was a failure and that he could only hope that his grandson would succeed where he failed.[1]
At one time, it was mentioned that the Springfield Mall was in a dilapidated state due to the mayor's dad being murdered there. However, this was just a rumor.[3]

Quimby Sr. ran an illegal liquor business, which prohibition caused to thrive in 1920. He then "expanded his bathtub gin operation to include sink vodka, toilet scotch, and bidet bourbon".
Joe Quimby was his first legitimate child. Joe Sr. also had children with Agnes Moorehead and, later, with all of his son's nannies. In 1961, Joe Quimby Sr. mysteriously disappeared. His body was found a decade later, marooned in a sand trap on the back nine.[4]
Behind the Laughter[edit]
His character design was based on Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. continuing Mayor Quimby being a parody of Ted Kennedy.[5]
