Fallout Boy is the sidekick of Radioactive Man. He first appeared in Radioactive Man #9. He is also a member of the Superior Squadron.

Publication and media history[edit]

Fallout Boy appeared both the black and white TV serial, played by Buddy Hodges, and the camp 1960s and 1970s TV show.[1]

Milhouse Van Houten was chosen to play Fallout Boy when a Radioactive Man film was being filmed in Springfield. However, Milhouse snapped under the pressure and quit, being replaced by Mickey Rooney, before the project was shelved.[2]

Comic history[edit]

History[edit]

Rod Runtledge was an average bookworm, until one day he met billionaire playboy Claude Kane III (Radioactive Man) at a radioactivity convention. A tall piece of machinery fell towards them. Claude grabbed Rod and jumped over the rail, Claude holding onto the machine. The machine came to life, and as the ray passed through Claude, it hit Rod. Rod received a pint-sized version of RM's powers, and became Fallout Boy.[3]

After this, Fallout Boy started helping Radioactive Man as his sidekick, helping to take down enemies such as Magmo,[4] Hypno-Head[5] and Shootin' Irons.[6]

Larva Girl kidnapped Fallout Boy and had Radioactive Man go to the planet Remitrom to get Zirconia-Gems to trade for Fallout Boy's life. When Radioactive Man got back to Zenith City, he fell in love with Larva Girl, due to exposure to Remitrom's sun. Fallout Boy was then made the ring bearer at the wedding.[7]

At some point, Fallout Boy lost his powers and became an ordinary high school student again.[8] However, he gained his powers again eventually.

Fallout Boy went with Radioactive Man to Dr. Crab's asteroid base to rescue the Superior Squad. When they got there, they handed themselves over to Dr. Crab in exchange for him not killing the Superior Squad. Radioactive Man managed to break out, but in the process got hit by Dr. Crab's particle blaster, killing him. Fallout Boy got very upset over the death of his mentor. At the funeral, Fallout Boy removed the lightning bolt from Radioactive Man's head before he was lowered into the ground. He then handed it to Gloria Grand.

As Fallout Boy went to clear out Radioactive Man's locker at the Mando Building, he found the Superior Squad fighting over who will be the new leader. Dr. Crab then attacked with his Crab-Bots, which Fallout Boy helped to fight. As he was getting beaten by the robots, Radioactive Man flew in, having come back from the dead. He then stops the robots and Dr. Crab. However, he then started to go evil. Fallout Boy went to Gloria to retrieve the lightning bolt and put it back into Radioactive Man's head as he was defeating the Superior Squad. This turned Radioactive Man good again.[9]

When Fallout Boy wanted an image change because Radioactive Man was sidelining him too much, he went to Libby Biaz who had him join the Bang Gang undercover so he could take it down. However, Radioactive Man didn't even notice he had joined a gang due to having been split from his alter-ego Claude Kane III. Eventually, Fallout Boy managed to turn the Bang Gang good and they signed on with Libby Biaz to have their image changed, with their leader Isotope Rodriguez threatening to hurt him if it didn't work out.[10]

Future[edit]

In the future, Rod Runtledge takes up the mantle of Radioactive Man. When Fallout Boy of the past calls him to ask if Radioactive Man from his time is there, the future Radioactive Man panics about speaking to his younger self.[6]

In other media[edit]

Radioactive Man: The Movie[edit]

In the Radioactive Man film, Rod Runtledge/Fallout Boy was played by Milhouse Van Houten. Rod was on the U.S.S. Serendipity with his mother, when his mother was held hostage by thugs looking to steal the payroll. Radioactive Man then came to the rescue and saved her, although Rod's mother later claimed that Radioactive Man didn't really exist. Later, as Rod was cycling, he got crushed by an X-Ray truck, driven by Otto Mann. The truck gave him powers and turned him into Fallout Boy.

Radioactive Man ran some tests on Fallout Boy and decided to train him as his sidekick. The two of them worked together fighting crime until one day Gloria Grand was kidnapped by Silly Sailor. Radioactive Man and Fallout Boy went to rescue her only to have their powers taken from them. They were then left hanging upside down in a cage but Fallout Boy managed to escape, without his powers still. He was then found by his mother and taken home again, punished for skipping dinner. Fallout Boy later saved Radioactive Man and revealed to him that they gained their powers back hours ago, Radioactive Man just didn't know.

Radioactive Man and Fallout Boy then go back to WZEN Tower to stop Dr. Swartzwelder broadcasting information harming Radioactive Man's reputation. They reveal that Dr. Swartzwelder is actually Dr. Clownius in disguise. After Dr. Clownius is arrested, Radioactive Man and Fallout Boy go back to fighting crime together.[11]

Radioactive Woman[edit]

A female reboot of Radioactive Man, called Radioactive Woman was in production, with Sherri and Terri Mackleberry playing the role of Fallout Girl, a female version of Fallout Boy. The movie never got finished.[12]

Behind the Laughter[edit]

When a pop punk band from Chicago, who are now known as Fall Out Boy, was playing at a local concert, they asked the audience for a suggestion for a band name. Somebody screamed Fallout Boy. The band chose the name and stuck with it. In many interviews, the band says how the name "Fallout Boy" was an idea from a fan and is a superhero sidekick from The Simpsons.
