Eustace Van Houten was the mayor of Springfield and the great-grandfather of Kirk Van Houten.

History[edit]

When Eustace was the mayor, he had the Great Springfield Gazebo built. However, the gazebo collapsed due to the bracing used to build it being faulty. After this incident, Eustace became a pariah in the town. His dying words were "my bad".

Years later, his story was taught in Springfield Elementary School. The book A Guide to Van Houten's Folly: From Ga-A-Bo to Ga-Z-Bo was about him.
