Sappho of Lesbos
|
Character Information
|
Sappho of Lesbos was an Ancient Greek poet.
History
When Marge suggested a family outing, Bart interpreted it to mean sexually, and said he'd start, exclaiming " Lisa's gay!". Lisa responded, sarcastically, that she wouldn't want to be gay like her heroes Billie Jean King, Susan Sontag, Sappho of Lesbos, and she suspects, Peppermint Patty.
Behind the Laughter
- Sappho wrote love poetry directed toward both men and women, which led to widespread speculation that she was homosexual or bisexual.
- The term "lesbian" (referring to gay women) derives from Sappho's birthplace, the island Lesbos.
- The term "sapphic" (also referring to female homosexuality) derives from her name.
