Hamlet was the prince of Denmark from the famous tragedy Hamlet by William Shakespeare which was retold in the book Classics for Children.

History[edit]

In the form of his father's ghost, Hamlet learned that his uncle Claudius had poured poison in his ear to kill him, marry Hamlet's mother Gertrude, and usurp the throne. His father commanded him to avenge his murder.

Prince Hamlet, with the help of a clown, staged a play to make Claudius reveal his guilt. Claudius realized Hamlet knew what he had done and attempted to kill him to keep the truth hidden. While trying to kill Claudius, Hamlet accidentally killed Polonius. Polonius's son, Laertes, proposed a duel with Prince Hamlet to seek revenge. However, Laertes accidentally killed himself during a "practice stab," and Hamlet proceeded to kill Claudius. As Hamlet walked away to celebrate his victory, he slipped on some blood and died from the fall.
