Senator Payne is an antagonist in the Mr. Smith Goes to Washington remake starring Mel Gibson.

History[edit]

In the new ending of the film produced by Mel Gibson and Homer Simpson, Jefferson Smith throws an American flag on a flagpole through Senator Payne's chest, killing him.

Behind the Laughter[edit]

The character design is based on Senator Paine in the original 1939 Mr. Smith Goes to Washington where he was played by Claude Rains.
