Jefferson Smith is the main character in the 1939 movie Mr. Smith Goes to Washington played by Jimmy Stewart and by Mel Gibson in the present-day remake.
History[edit]
In the original test screening of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington remake, Smith is filibustering on the floor of the U.S. Senate.
In the updated reshoots, Smith went on a killing spree, killing all the senators and even the President of the United States.
Behind the Laughter[edit]
Jefferson Smith is an idealistic Boy Scout leader throw into the political arena after his appointment to fill a Senate vacancy in the original 1939 Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Due to the its critical and commercial success the role made Jimmy Stewart into a major movie star. Similar to Springfield the movie never specifies which state Jefferson Smith represents in the U.S. Senate.
