Hamlet was the prince of Denmark from the famous tragedy Hamlet by William Shakespeare which was retold in the book Classics for Children.
History
In the form of his father's ghost told him how his uncle Claudius poured poison in his ear so he could marry Hamlet's mother Gertrude and usurp the throne. His father commanded him to avenge his murder.
Prince Hamlet, with the help of a clown, put on a play to make Claudius reveal himself to be guilty. Claudius then realized that Hamlet knew what he had done and tried to kill Hamlet to keep the truth from being revealed. Hamlet, aiming to kill Claudius, accidentally killed Polonius. His son, Laertes, proposed to duel Prince Hamlet for revenge. However, Laertes accidentally killed himself while taking a "practice stab", and Hamlet proceeded to kill Claudius. Hamlet walked away to celebrate his victory, but he slipped on some blood and died from the fall.
Behind the Laughter
Prince Hamlet appears in the "Do the Bard, Man" segment of "Tales from the Public Domain". The segment is a re-telling of the Shakespearean tragedy Hamlet with various Springfieldians portraying the play's characters including Bart Simpson as Prince Hamlet.
