Thomas Alva Edison was an American inventor, scientist, and businessman who developed many devices that greatly influenced life around the world, including the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and a long-lasting, practical electric light bulb.

History[edit]

After Lisa mentioned to Homer that Thomas Edison invented the film projector as well as many other inventions Homer uses, Homer decided to learn more about Edison and eventually idolized him. At the Edison Museum in New Jersey which preserves his laboratory, Bart and Homer aimed to smash the chair which was identical to Homer's invention. On the car trip to the museum Edison's ghost appeared in front of Homer trying to convince him to not destroy the chair. However, when they visited the museum, Homer discovered that Edison idolized Leonardo da Vinci and decides against destroying the chair.[1]

Abe once claimed to be the first Springfieldian to ever own a radio, which only played Edison continuously reciting the alphabet.[2]

When Mr. Burns was given a veggie burger, he said that he felt like Thomas Edison "on that incredible, magical night". Smithers asked if he meant the night he invented the light bulb, but Mr. Burns said that he meant the night he invented the electric chair.[3]
