Jesse W. Reno was an American inventor. He is a member of Homer Simpson's Lazy Hall of Fame.

Homer includes Reno in The Lazy Hall of Fame for his invention of the escalator, which was a vast improvement over stairs in getting a people up a hill with the least amount of effort: "The stairs move and you just stand there!"

Behind the Laughter[edit]

In real life, Jesse W. Reno (1861-1947) invented the first working escalator. The image is based on the real photograph taken in 1903 at R. H. White Department Store in Boston.[1] [2] The city of Reno, Nevada was not named after him, but for his father Major-General Jesse L. Reno.
