History[edit]

After Homer became smart, he watched Love is Nice, in which Richard Gere played a groom. Afterward, he told the crowd that the film was tired and predictable because he didn't understand a joke. Homer informed the crowd that Julia Roberts, the bride, was going to marry Richard Gere. Dr. Hibbert said he thought she would end up with the rich snob, and the Sea Captain added that the role was ably played by Bill Paxton. Homer corrected them, saying it was Bill Pullman, before someone knocked him out and threw him out of the cinema.[1]

When Lisa Simpson became interested in another religion because she felt Christianity was losing its message, she visited the Springfield Buddhist Temple. Inside the temple, Lisa found Lenny and Carl meditating. Richard Gere then revealed himself to Lisa, surprising Lenny. Richard Gere taught Lisa the basics of Buddhism, and she felt the religion was right for her.

After embracing Buddhism, the rest of the family disapproved of her new religion. They tried to trick Lisa into celebrating Christmas, believing it would bring her back to Christianity. However, Lisa decided to run away and returned to the Buddhist Temple. She spoke to Richard Gere again, who explained to Lisa that Buddhists respected all religions and were free to celebrate any holidays they wanted. Lisa then returned home to celebrate Christmas with her family while Richard Gere was going to spend Christmas with his stepdaughter, Hannah.[2]
