El Barto

Character Information
|
El Barto is Bart Simpson's graffiti-tagging alter-ego, and is one of the most infamous outlaws in Springfield.
Contents
History[edit]
El Barto's signature can be seen in a number of different places around town, especially on state buildings. To this day, El Barto's true identity remains a mystery to the vast majority of the people of Springfield.
However, Bart told Principal Skinner that he was El Barto when he and Skinner fell into a vat of Peanut Shrimp.[1] Homer also seems to know who El Barto is, as he said "If Bart can be El Barto..."[2]
How Homer found out isn't known, but it's possible that Bart told him as well. However, Homer did once say that he suspected that Milhouse was El Barto, even though at the time he was looking at a graffiti tag that showed Bart as Zorro.[3] Another person thought to be El Barto was a fifth-grader named 'Eloise Barto', which Bart had sometimes been confused with.[4]
El Barto's notoriety extends even to Springfield Elementary School. Seymour Skinner once said that "Bart is the second most wanted student after the mysterious El Barto."[5] He and his mother has tried to investigate who he is; with Ralph, Martin and Nelson possibly being associated with him.[6]
El Barto's tag has also been seen at East Springfield Elementary School.[7]
Variations / Uses by other characters[edit]
Homer once tried to adopt "El Homo" as his graffiti tag alias, similar to "El Barto". However, he quickly gave up on the idea because his alias was misinterpreted by a Gay Latino man as a declaration that Homer was homosexual, rather than Homer's intended meaning of it being a Mexicanized version of his name.[2]
After beating Bart in a skateboarding race, Barb Simpkins added insult to injury by tagging Bart's skateboard with "El Barbo".[8]
Marge sprayed "El Margo" onto Principal York's shirt with ketchup once during her time at Springfield Middle School, but complained about it being grammatically incorrect, changing it to "La Marga".[9]

When Maggie and Bart clashed over what to watch on TV, Maggie spray-painted the "El Barto" tag on the wall to get Bart in trouble so she could watch what she wanted.[10]
A severe blow to the head left Bart able to speak only Spanish and he went to a Lucha Libre bout with Pepi and Bumblebee Man. When one wrestler cheated (he was about to hit his opponent with a chair), Bart moved the bandages on his head over his face to make a mask, said he was El Barto, and leapt into the ring to attack the cheater. The intervention was unsuccessul, however, as Bart ended up being hit in the head with the chair, and this second blow left him able to speak only Klingon.[7]
The cover artwork of the comic story collection Bart Simpson: Big Shot! prominently features a large statue of Bart with the words "Eat My Shorts!" chisled into the pedestal. On the rear cover, the statue's pedestal has been spray-painted with the graffito "Bart is a wiener!" and signed with the tag "El Principalo". A spray paint can is on the ground near the base of the statue, and Principal Skinner is running away from the scene.[11]
A monster was seen spray-painting "El Muerto" (Spanish for "The Dead One") on a wall near the Simpson home.[12]
The Simpsons Tapped Out[edit]
When a friend spray paints on a number of buildings there is a tag "El Barto" left in red spray can.
