Synopsis[edit]
- On a family vacation to Niagara Falls, Lisa is mistakenly granted political asylum in Canada. When Marge goes to rescue her, they are forced to re-evaluate their love for America as they spend time in Canada.
Plot[edit]
The Simpson family visits Mt. Splashmore and waits in line to ride the waterslide. Just as they reach the top, Homer begins saying "Points" and takes them away, leaving the area, which is now a "biological warfare test range" before rushing them into the car and leaving.
Homer has earned 2 million hotel rewards points and takes the family to Niagara Falls, driving through Upstate New York while singing a song. At the falls, Bart and Lisa play the Battle for the Fall game, bouncing against each other. Lisa bounces too hard and falls over the edge, but is rescued by a Canadian mountie.
She is taken to the hospital where Dr. Chang treats her and recommends a five-day stay for observation. When Homer mentions needing another mortgage, Dr. Chang reminds him that healthcare is free in Canada. Lisa begins ranting about America to the mountie, who calms her down with an injection.
The Canadian authorities refuse to let the family stay with Lisa, deporting them and placing her in a foster home. Back in Springfield, her absence negatively affects the town, including the Springfield Elementary School Band.
Lisa starts attending Alanis Morissette Elementary School and asks to send a note to Justin Trudeau to apologize for comments made by the American president. She is connected to him via Skype. Trudeau becomes annoyed at being called "weak" and demonstrates his strength, but when Lisa brings up the SNC-Lavalin affair, he escapes by climbing out of his office window.
Lisa later plays Offred in the school play. Meanwhile, Marge sneaks across the Detroit River on the Ambassador Bridge in the Squeaky-Voiced Teen's car to reach the foster home and convinces Lisa to leave. A teacher tries to ease Lisa's departure by pointing out flaws in Canada, while a Canadian version of Ralph plays in the snow.
At the American Consulate, officials refuse to let them re-enter the U.S., then refuse to let them stay in Canada either. Marge encourages Lisa to think of the good things about her home, convincing her to return.
However, the people meant to take them back abandon them on a frozen river. Homer and Bart arrive with a truck to rescue them, but it sinks into the river, forcing them to run the rest of the way back to Springfield.
Lisa happily reunites with everyone, including Princess and Ralph. For her show and tell, she brings the Canadian mountie—who also brings Nelson's dad with him.
Production[edit]
The Newfoundland song sung by the newfie was originally going to be Bruce Moss' "The Islander", with Moss being offered $20K for the use of the song. However, Moss turned The Simpsons down, which led to "Islander Forever" by Arthur O'Brien being used instead. Since the episode came out, Moss has said "I'm not sorry I didn't license it. And after what I've been told about this episode, I'm really happy I didn't".[1]
