Chewbacca is a Wookiee, an alien.
History
When the FBI investigated Homer's alien sighting, Agents Mulder and Scully assembled a lineup of aliens for Homer to identify which one he had seen. In addition to Chewbacca, the lineup included Marvin the Martian, Gort, ALF and Kang or Kodos. Chewbacca was later seen with the rest of Springfield, singing "Good Morning Starshine". He was wearing a "Homer is a dope" T-shirt.[1] His picture is seen on Star Wars Monopoly.[2] He also features on the bottle of Scent of a Wookiee.[3]

When Homer sat him down on the carousel at Krustyland, he said that they are the first people "ever to ride this baby", and they are like "that space guy who did that moon thing!". Lisa asked if he meant Neil Armstrong, to which Homer replies that he meant Chewbacca.[4]
