When Bart went to visit Homer at the Nuclear Power Plant, he found that Homer wasn't there. The janitor then appeared and told Bart that he would never have the same job and lifestyle as his father because it was unattainable now. The janitor then took Bart back through time to show him how the lifestyles people have had changed since World War II, all whilst singing "Goodbye, Middle Class".
Eventually, the janitor told Bart that he had to burn it all down, referring to the system. Bart thought that the janitor meant that he should burn his clothes instead. When Bart set fire to his clothes, which spread to the treehouse, the janitor disappeared. The janitor then returned as a fireman and took part in the big musical finale.[1]
