The crowd and stage at Woodstock.

The Woodstock Festival (also referred to as simply "Woodstock") was held in upstate New York in August 1969. It lasted three days and over 500,000 people attended.

History[edit]

Homer grooves at Woodstock.

When Springfield went through an economic downturn, a town meeting was held, and Mayor Quimby decided to legalize gambling. One of the proposals presented to Mr. Burns was Woodstock.[1]

Among the attendees were Abraham Simpson, Mona Simpson, young Homer, and Mona's hippie friends Seth and Munchie. While the other attendees were casually dressed and either standing or sitting on blankets or the grass, Abe looked decidedly out of place sitting in a folding chair and wearing a business suit. During Jimi Hendrix's guitar-solo performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner", Abe booed, hollered "Bring on Sha Na Na!" and held up a sign reading "Bowzer for President". Mona objected, "Whoa, mellow out, Abe. Little Homer's trying to groove!" Abe turned around and saw Homer dancing naked in the mud, jamming out and singing to Hendrix's guitar licks.

Abe then chewed Homer out, telling him to put on some pants and then pull them down for a spanking. Munchie rebuked Abe ("Whoa! Get a load of Captain Bringdown!") and Homer protested that he wanted to play in the mud and be a hippie. Abe, undeterred, said that what Homer needed was "a good long hitch in Vietnam", grabbed Homer by the arm and dragged him away, looking for an enlistment tent.

Years later, when Abe told Homer about their having been at Woodstock, Homer decided to try the hippie lifestyle for himself.

Behind the Laughter[edit]

At Woodstock in real life, Sha-Na-Na performed just before Hendrix, not after as Abe's booing implies. However, it's possible that Abe was booing in order to bring back Sha-Na-Na.
