There were two prominent Inanimate Carbon Rods. The first was an employee of the plant who, in the event of the death/incapacitation of all other employees in the entire plant, would become a manager before Homer. It also got an employee award before Homer. The other Rod possibly went on to a career in the United States space program after Homer unintentionally lodged the Rod in the shuttle door, closing it and allowing Homer and the other astronauts a safe return to Earth. The Rod of course got all the credit. The Space Rod went on to be featured on the cover of ''Time'' magazine with the caption 'In Rod We Trust!'. It was also given the main seat in the subsequent parade, much to Homer's annoyance, presumably because he had been upstaged yet again by an Inanimate Carbon Rod. Homer then went on to turn off the video of the parade, much to the chagrin of Bart and Lisa, proclaiming "they were about to show a close-up of the Rod."
