Henry Louis Gates Jr. is an American literary critic, professor, historian, and filmmaker and host of the show Finding Your Roots.

History[edit]

Dr. Gates bought Carl Carlson's belt buckle from the Rich Texan. When Carl wanted to track it down, he found that Dr. Gates had bought it and was invited onto the show. Dr. Gates researched Carl's family history and found that he was descended from a former slave called Ellis. After leaving his former slavers, Ellis became a cowboy and his ancestor was Wyatt, the father of Carl.

After Carl learned about his history, he went to ride a bull like his father did. Dr. Gates went with him and told Carl's friends that he saw this sort of thing a lot, mentioning that he had to pull Laurence Fishburne out of a jet cockpit. After Carl got injured during the bull ride, a woman said that she'd fix him as her great-great-grandfather was a doctor during the Civil War, and Dr. Gates shooed her away.[1]
