Dr. Joan Bushwell is a chimpanzee researcher.

Biography

When the Simpsons were lost in Tanzania, they found their way to Joan Bushwell's Chimp Refuge, which Lisa had heard of. The family went to Dr. Bushwell for help. Lisa told Dr. Bushwell that her work had inspired her. Dr. Bushwell told the Simpsons that every day she got up at 5:30am to watch the chimps and spent most of her day watching them.

Eventually, a group of poachers attacked the refuge. After fending them off for a while, Lisa discovered that they were with Greenpeace and they were there to save the chimps. It was then revealed that the refuge was built on a diamond mine and Dr. Bushwell had essentially enslaved the chimps to mine diamonds for her. Dr. Bushwell offered the Simpsons diamonds to keep quiet about her operation and they accepted.

Behind the Laughter

Dr. Bushwell is partly based on the renowned primatologist Jane Goodall.
