Only son of the Simpson family, and the first-born, although in a Treehouse of Horror eposode, Bart has a twin, Hugo Simpson. While Bart primarily serves the role of the troublemaker in the family, he is basically a decent kid. For example, when he is caught shoplifting from Try 'N Save (a local store; and cartoon version of WalMart) in the episode Marge Be Not Proud, Bart makes amends to his disappointed mother by giving Marge a portrait of himself. "Bart" is an intentional anagram of "brat," as well as an homage to creator Matt Groening's brother Mark, whom he has stated was the real inspiration for Bart.
