The Leader is the leader of the short-lived cult of Movementarianism.

History

The Leader was the head of the Movementarians. Although he was rarely seen, his picture was on the pamphlets given out to potential members and was put up all over the Movementarian Compound. The Leader made very rare public appearances and they were only when he left the compound in his Rolls-Royce. As he was driven past the crowd, he would lower the window and wave at his people, not revealing his face.

The Leader and Movementarianism promised to take his followers to Blisstonia, a planet where the Movementarians will begin their perfect lives. However, The Leader had to get the inter-galactic vehicle ready to take them there, which is what he needed the money from his followers for. He kept the spaceship in The Forbidden Barn, where he worked on it in secret with no other Movementarians allowed to enter.

The Movementarians in Springfield gained a large following with many people moving into the compound, including Homer Simpson. Whilst many of the Movementarians were quick to join, Homer was initially resistant to the brainwashing attempts. Eventually, Homer succumbed to the brainwashing with the Movementarians singing "Leader" to him, to the tune of the "Batman Theme". Whilst Bart, Maggie, and even Lisa fell to the cult's brainwashing, Marge didn't and escaped to get help from Reverend Lovejoy and Groundskeeper Willie. The three of them kidnapped Homer and the kids and took him to Ned's house to try and break the brainwashing.

When the Movementarians deployed their lawyers to bring the Simpsons back to the compound, they arrived just as Homer got a drop of beer on his tongue. This broke Homer's brainwashing and he went to show the Movementarians that their Leader was a fraud. Homer opened the doors to the Forbidden Barn and found that there was a flying saucer inside. The Leader then told everyone that Homer's actions had doomed them all and the flying saucer took off to fly away. As it did, the flying saucer fell apart, revealing that The Leader was on a bicycle inside a frame with bags of money from his followers attached. The flying bicycle then ended up crashing into Cletus's farm, where Cletus demanded The Leader give him the bags of money.[1]

He took part in the world's tallest human pyramid record attempt.[2] He was part of the angry mob after Homer for placing Springfield under the dome.[3]

Behind the Laughter

  • The Leader was based largely on L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology.
  • However, The Leader's penchant for Rolls-Royce automobiles is probably a reference to the Oregon-based cult leader Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, or Osho, who was reputed to have a different Rolls-Royce for every day of the year, all of them bought by his followers.
