Milo is a character in The Phantom Tollhouse.

History[edit]

Milo was in his room, bored, when a voice started speaking to him. This turned out to be the Phantom Tollhouse, which said that it was the gateway to Milo's imagination. It told Milo to get in a toy car, drive through, and pay the toll. Milo reluctantly agreed to do so, with Barney collecting the money. As Milo drove down the road, he found the Whither Man next to a signpost. He asked the Whither Man for directions to Great Expectations, but the Whither Man told Milo that he could only tell him whither, not where. Milo became annoyed and drove off, passing Moleman, Jasper, and the old Jewish man sitting in a hole in the ground. Suddenly, the Guide Dog jumped into his car, saying that he was a guide dog with a compass on his side. Milo continued driving and came to Alphabetburg. He went to the Word Bizarre there, where he met Spelling Bee Man and the Hummingbug. Officer Small Claims came along and arrested Milo, the Guide Dog, and Hummingbug. They were thrown in jail with Vaguely Morose, who told them a riddle about how to get out of jail. Milo decided to just climb out of the window instead.

Milo went to see King Zzzz, who tasked him with finding the princesses, Search and Rescue. He was told to take the Guide Dog and Hummingbug with him as guides. Their first stop was the house where the world's tallest midget, shortest giant, fattest thin man, and thinnest fat man lived, who all turned out to be different people, breaking Milo's expectations. They continued on the journey, meeting Word Birds, Dr. Dischord, a faceless demon, a conductor, Lindsey Naegle in the Soundchecker's Tower, the Dodocahedron, a floating Martin Prince, and Ned Flanders. Finally, they arrived at Numeralville, where Milo met with Mr. Mathematigician. Mr. Mathematigician told them that the princesses were in the palace in the smog, so Milo headed to the palace. When he got there, he was shocked to find that the princesses looked like Sherri and Terri. Milo refused to rescue them and left, with the twins saying that he would have to get past the demons outside the castle. Milo took his chances with the demons but was chased by a mob. Milo then woke up in his room and thought it was a dream. However, the Guide Dog told him that it was all real and that he and the Hummingbug had dragged him to his bed.
