Character Information
|
George Steinbrenner is the former owner of the New York Yankees.
History[edit]
When Mr. Burns forced Don Mattingly to cut his sideburns, Mattingly was angered but muttered that he still liked Burns better than Steinbrenner.
Behind the Laughter[edit]
Mr. Burns having Mattingly cut his hair is a reference to George Steinbrenner's rule about players not being allowed to have any facial hair or hair longer than their neck. A year before the episode aired, the real life Mattingly was forced to cut his long hair.
George Steinbrenner purchased the New York Yankees from CBS in 1973 and since then, the Steinbrenner family has been running the team. His aggressive attitude toward free agents gave the Yankees World Series championships in 1977, 1978, 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000. The Yankees made it to the World Series also in 1976, 1981, 2001 and 2003 during his tenure as owner. George died on July 13, 2010 at the age of eighty.
