Monk Murphy is the deaf son of Bleeding Gums Murphy.

History[edit]

When Lisa found out that Bleeding Gums had a son she didn't know about, she tracked him down and introduced herself to him. When Lisa tried to play him the song that his father had written for him, "Monk's New Tune", Monk told Lisa that he couldn't enjoy the song as he was deaf. Monk then explained to Lisa that he was born deaf and the cochlear implants were too expensive for his father to afford for him. Therefore, Monk learned to lip-read and use sign language to communicate with other people.

When Lisa told Monk about the Springfield Lottery using Bleeding Gums' song in an advert, Monk got annoyed as his father hated gambling. Lisa then told Monk that they would get royalties from the song being used by going to the publisher and demanding justice. Lisa then took Monk to The Jazz Hole where some of the musicians who performed there recognized Monk. Etta Pryor told Monk that she had written songs about him when he was a baby. Monk then discovered the album Broken Elevator Blues on the wall of the club and found that the publisher was Treasured Artists Publishing.

The owner of Treasured Artists Publishing made Monk sign a form before he told Monk and Lisa that the rights to Bleeding Gums' music had been sold off to multiple companies long ago. After finding this out, Monk became dejected and gave up. He told Lisa that he had been happy until she had come along before he left. After doing some soul searching, Lisa decided to write an apology to give to Monk. She then went to see him at The Sky's the Limit, a center for deaf children, where Monk served as a mentor to the children who went there. Lisa gave Monk the gist of the apology and they made up. Monk then told Lisa that he had gotten the money to buy the cochlear implants by coming ninth in the lottery, which annoyed Lisa. On the Springfield Bridge, Monk had his implants activated. Lisa wanted the first thing he heard to be his father's music, but instead, he heard Lisa yelling "screw you, Bart!" instead. Lisa then played the song "Monk's New Tune" for Monk, which made him cry because he heard his father's voice for the first time.[1]

Monk Murphy visited Hair-Do the Right Thing Barber Shop.[2]
