Dr Marvin Monroe (voiced by Harry Shearer) is a local psychiatrist who was once Mr Burns’ therapist.

Contributions

  • In There's No Disgrace Like Home, the Simpson family went to him to help them become closer. Sadly he was unable to help them and had to give them double their money back. With that money they purchased a new TV and were able to bond over that.
  • In The Call of the Simpsons, Dr. Monroe is one of the scientists who studies Homer to figure out if he is indeed the missing link. The findings were inconclusive.

Model for Character

He is likely based on Hank Azaria's professor of abnormal psychology during his undergraduate years at Tufts University.

Other Plans

(A plot conceived for him in the early years and confirmed by Matt Groening[1] was never actually used.)

Death

References

References to his death began to appear in the series, such as the Marvin Monroe Memorial Hospital in "Who Shot Mr. Burns? (Part One)" and a mention of his death in the 138th episode retrospective; there are also glimpses of both his grave (in Alone Again, Natura-Diddily) and a school gym named after him.

Hiatus

The creators put the doctor on that ten-year-long hiatus because voicing Monroe hurt Shearer's throat.

After Death Showings

It is revealed that he is is dead before season 15 because his tombstone was shown in season 11 and Marvin Monroe Memorial Hospital was shown many times before season 15 also. In the episode "Diatribe of a Mad Housewife" in season 15 he is shown far after his death asking Marge for an autograph, she said to him she hasn't seen him for years he told her he has been very sick.
