Character Information
|
Smarmley was the faithful lackey of Burnseneezer Scrooge.
History[edit]
Bob Cratchit gave a Christmas card to Scrooge. Scrooge was so touched by the gesture that he teared up and started sniffling as he and Cratchit exchanged good-nights. Smarmley, who was seated at a low desk below Scrooge's money-counting table, asked Scrooge if he was all right. Scrooge replied that they were going into the greeting card business.
The card business did very well, and Smarmley continued to work for Scrooge. However, within a year, Smarmley died of ink poisoning.
Behind the Laughter[edit]
- Smarmley appears in the "origin" portion of the comic story Grampa's Christmas Origins: Christmas Cards. It has the same setting (19-century London) as A Christmas Carol and has Waylon Smithers, Jr. cast as Jacob Marley, now called "Smarmley".
- Smarmley's name is a portmanteau on "Smithers" and "Marley". It may also be a play on the word "smarmy", a term used to describe someone with an ingratiating personal style—a characterization suitable for both Smarmley's attitude toward Scrooge and Smithers' toward Mr. Burns.
