Homer's observation is a reference to a longtime running gag in Peanuts about Snoopy's doghouse being much bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.

Junior Camper Badge-Fussbudgeting.png Flanders' Book of Faith "Fussbudgeting" is one of the many Junior Camper merit badges that Ned Flanders has earned. The badge is an obvious reference to Peanuts, as it shows Lucy van Pelt with an outraged expression on her face. Also, in the early years of the comic strip, Lucy was often called a "fussbudget" by the other characters.
