Homeowner Homer is a Simpsons Comics story first printed in Simpsons Comics #158.
Synopsis[edit]
- Wanting to change the Homeowner Association rules, Homer runs for president. However, when he wins, the power quickly goes to his head and soon all his neighbors want him gone.
Plot[edit]
Outside Hot Tub Heaven at the Springfield Mall, Bart and Lisa try and guess the number of jellybeans in a large jar to win a jacuzzi. However, Lisa's guess is not even close. Meanwhile, Homer and Marge are arguing about Homer having forgotten to bring Maggie's sweater. Marge asks Homer how many times she asked him to bring it, and Homer responds with "one million thirty-four thousand six hundred and eighty-eight times," which just happens to be the exact number of jellybeans. Later that afternoon, the hot tub is delivered to the house. At the same time, Homeowner Association president Herb Barnstable is cycling past. He sees the hot tub and stops to tell Homer that outdoor hot tubs are a violation of the Homeowner Association rules. Herb then gives Homer a list of all the violations he needs to fix before he leaves.
Angry about this, Homer attends the next Homeowner Association meeting. However, he is told to wait for the scheduled agenda items to be finished before he can speak. Homer falls asleep during this, and when he wakes up, he finds that the meeting is over and everybody has left. Skip Tarrington then introduces himself to Homer, and Homer realizes that he has issues with the Homeowner Association too. Skip tells Homer that one man can make a difference and convinces Homer to run for Homeowner Association president. The following day, Homer starts his campaign. However, he realizes that he might not be able to get enough votes to make a difference. He talks to Skip about his concerns, and Skip tells Homer to change everyone's perception of him and connect with people on a personal level to secure votes. Taking this to heart, Homer starts canvassing the neighbors, telling people lies about Herb Barnstable and his policies.
The following week, Herb reads out the winner of the vote and is shocked to find that Homer had won. Homer celebrates and immediately tells Herb to get rid of his fiberglass deer from his lawn. When Homer asks Skip what's next, Skip tells Homer that advising him isn't his scene and leaves. Back at home, Homer doesn't know what to do until Lisa tells him that he has a mandate and people have faith in him. Homer takes this the wrong way and thinks that the voters are now stuck with him. At the next meeting, Homer lays out several new rules, shocking the board members and his family. Soon, he changes the name of the neighborhood to "Coolsville" and becomes tyrannical with the enforcement of his new rules. This angers the residents, lowers house prices, and causes people to start leaving. When Ned Flanders sets up a cross in his front yard, Homer douses it with gasoline and sets fire to it as it's against the rules. This angers the community, who see this as an attack against Christianity, and soon an angry mob forms.
Lisa tries to talk the mob down, but is unsuccessful. Homer flees the house and goes on the run. He finds himself at Bluebird Avenue, the street where Skip lives, and goes looking for his house. When he finds it, he overhears Skip giving a presentation to several rich people about how he got Homer to help lower house prices and force people out of the area so he could buy up the properties and convert the neighborhood into housing for the rich. Angry at this, Homer confronts Skip, who tells Homer that it's too late for him to do anything about it. Homer calls the mob over to Skip's house, and the mob chases Skip out of town. Homer's neighbors thank Homer for saving the neighborhood.
A week later, Homer is lounging in the hot tub while Lisa asks him if he learned his lesson. Homer says that he's hungry and walks through the hole he made in the fence to Mr. Carruthers' house to ask him for food since he was barbecuing. Meanwhile, the Crazy Cat Lady is revealed to be the new Homeowner Association president.
