History
Homer Simpson started off as a really cool character who was a great police cop with a cool catchphrase "And that's the end of that chapter", and a scarf which he flicked around his neck. This was only in the pilot episode of the series. He also owned a palace in Europe.
In the next episode, he was turned into a comedic character who was very accident prone and had a new catchphrase. He got stuck on top of a lamppost some how. He had a tendency to walk into cacti.
Reaction
Originally, they all thought Homer was great due to the character having the same name and they were led to believe that the character was based off the real Homer Simpson. But, from the second episode onwards, Homer became a laughing stock. The citizens of Springfield laughed at Homer as the character had the same name as him. Homer changed his name to Max Power because of the negative reaction towards him.
Traits
Homer Simpson's trait of walking into cacti was gained after the real Homer went to see the executives of FOX and ask why his character had been turned into a buffoon. Homer then walked into a cactus which was then written into the show.
