For Bart's cow in "Apocalypse Cow": see Lou (cow).

Lou is a police sergeant, and, by far, the most intelligent and competent officer of the Springfield Police. He is used as a foil to Chief Wiggum, and often takes the time to point out Wiggum's mistakes (often while a crime, or the pursuit of a criminal is still in progress).

Role in The Simpsons

He speaks more than his counterpart Eddie. Although he rarely comes up, when he does he is in a police uniform. In the 'Bart wants what it wants episode' of season 13 Lou says he wants to leave the force as there is more money in private security, nothing ever becomes of this though. His favorite on duty beverage is beer.

Education

Although he has never stated so explicitly, other characters have intimated that he is a graduate of Princeton University. Following his undergraduate career, Lou applied and was accepted to law school at an unspecified university, but was forced to drop out as he could not afford the tuition. His talents are abusing power and intimidating suspects.

Family

At one point, before the series' inception, Lou was married to a woman named Amy. "Bart of War" shows Lou is then divorced from his wife. He complains occasionally that Eddie has been seeing his ex-wife, causing Chief Wiggum to act as mediator. Lou's largest role was in "Stop, Or My Dog Will Shoot!", where he is featured prominently as the new owner of Santa's Little Helper. This episode reveals Lou has a girlfriend named Charquelle who had wanted to party with him. He was a member of the Grunge Band Sadgasm along with Lenny, Carl and Homer. His unintelligible joy is hot and cold running chicks.

Creation

Lou was based on Lou Whitaker according to season one DVD commentary. Hank Azaria based Lou's voice on Sylvester Stallone.

Trivia

Lou was colored yellow in the episode "Krusty Gets Busted."
