Bartholomew "Bart" Jojo Simpson voiced by Nancy Cartwright, is the oldest child and only son of Homer and Marge Simpson, and is the brother of Lisa and Maggie. According to The Bart Book he was born on April 1, 1980. He, along with many of Springfield's citizens, is ambidextrous, but is most commonly seen writing left-handed.

Personality
Bart is a underachieving, defiant and hyper active Ten-Year-Old boy who is proud of what he is. From birth Bart showed early signs of being a hell raiser, as we see when he sets his fathers tie on fire after he is born. Bart is a trouble maker and enjoys disrupting the normal routines at home and at school with his pranks that are at times very elaborate. He enjoys bothering others and shows a general ignorance to others feelings and what damage he could cause in his pranks, yet he is aware when he takes something to far and always tries to redeem himself in the end.
+
He is a self-proclaimed underachiever who begins each show in detention writing lines on the blackboard. He is easily distracted, even, strangely enough by algebraic equations. His penchant for shocking people (including Springfield's rich citizen Charles Montgomery Burns) began before he was born: Bart "mooned" Dr. Hibbert while he performed a sonogram on Marge, and moments after being born he set fire to Homer's tie.

He is not technically dim-witted like Homer, but uninterested and has problems focusing his attention (He has Attention Deficit Disorder as revealed in "Brother's Little Helper") which is a main cause for his slow wits. In the instances where he does start to pay attention, like when he becomes Hall Monitor in "Separate Vocations" or when he takes Focusyn for his ADD, Bart shows more signs of intelligence and his grades improve though it never stays this way. Bart can display signs of problem solving despite his low intelligence, and with a little help of his sister Lisa Simpson at times, they have been able to solve many problems in Springfield. Together they have been able to foil several schemes concocted by Sideshow Bob, reunite Krusty the Klown with his father, often help along the love life of Seymour Skinner and Edna Krabapple, get Principal Skinner's job back after he was fired, Help Otto get his Drivers License, organize a special comeback episode for Krusty the Klown to put his show back on the air and many more. Bart is capable of learning several linguistics as he has shown. He has learned French, Spanish, Latin, Pig Latin, Japanese and Cantonese to date, though has not spoken them since the episode he learned them.

He is considerably motivated in disrupting the routine at Springfield Elementary, and his pranks are often elaborately complex, while his actions and speech frequently show considerable mental agility, street-smarts, and understanding, so he cannot be called "stupid". Bart also shows amazing intelligence outside of his pranks. Outsmarting Sideshow Bob, figuring out how to save the snakes on Whacking Day, getting the Lemon tree back in a Trojan Horse method, giving advanced knowledge about George Washington in the French and Indian war, and learning other languages are just a few examples. In "Separate Vocations" when Bart becomes hall monitor, his grades go up showing that he only struggles because he doesn't pay attention, not because he's dumb. This is reinforced in the episode "Brother's Little Helper", in which it is revealed that Bart suffers from Attention Deficit Disorder. Despite this, however, he seems to have trouble understanding even the simplest things, such as the word "irony", what the equator is and that the logo on his globe ("Rand McNally") isn't actually a country. However, this may be because he remembers more advanced knowledge like the date George Washington surrendered a fort to the French. The fact that he is the son of Homer and shares many of the same mannerisms and behaviors may account for his antics. Homer even described Bart as "a younger, more in-your-face version" of himself. It is often joked that Bart is a pawn of the devil due to his mischievous behavior, such as when Lisa calls him "the Devil's cabana boy", a role which Bart seems to relish in.

Bart's interests are purely those of a Ten-Year-Old. He enjoys television (His favorite show is Krusty the Klown) and reads comic books (Radioactive Man). He has a very find talent for skateboarding and likes Video/Computer games. He constantly expresses his distaste in girls though has actually fallen in love many times and even kissed before despite his fear in 'cooties'. Bart's best friend is Milhouse van Houten, and they do mostly everything together. He has hinted before his two favorite movies are Jaws and the Star Wars Trilogy. He is allergic to Shrimp (Like Marge, butterscotch, imitation butterscotch, glow-in-the-dark Monster Makeup and Cauliflower.

Although he gets into endless trouble and is mean, shallow and selfish, Bart also exhibits many qualities of high integrity. He has, on a few occasions, helped the love life of his school Principal Seymour Skinner and his teacher Edna Krabappel despite the fact he often terrorizes them. Although he hates school, he has also aided in various efforts to keep it open during times where it is dangerously close to being closed or actually is. He often befriends outcasts like his best friend Milhouse Van Houten. One great example of his quasi sense of honor is in the episode This Little Wiggy where Bart stands up for Ralph Wiggum at the cost of peer popularity.

The Simpson family has a strained relationship, but Bart has the shakiest grounds with his family members. He has a turbulent connection with his father due to Bart's mischievousness and Homer's bad parenting skills and laziness. Bart refers to him as Homer instead of dad, and in turn Homer refers to Bart as 'The boy'. Bart also suffers parental abuse from Homer, who strangles him every time Bart angers him which is often. Homer also has pitted Bart against his sister Lisa several times for his affection. The two have much in common though and are able to bond with each other. Marge is more caring and nurturing to Bart. He is humiliated by her overwhelming motherly attention, then feels unloved in "Marge Be Not Proud" when after Bart is caught stealing she figures he is growing up and stops giving him so much attention. Both Homer and Marge love Bart despite the fact he is a hand full and a constant source of annoyance.

Due to Bart's mischievousness and Homer's often uncaring and incompetent behavior, the two have a turbulent relationship. Bart will often address Homer by his first name instead of "Dad". Homer in turn often refers to him as "the boy" while his mother calls him her "special little guy". Marge is much more caring, understanding and nurturing than Homer. However, she often refers to Bart as "hand full" and is often embarrassed by his antics. Whenever Homer finds out that Bart has said or done something stupid or bad, he yells out: "Why you little–!", and strangles him in anger. But despite that, Homer loves Bart, just like Marge.

He has a sibling rivalry with his sister Lisa, and the two are at most times fighting verbally and physically. Bart likes to torture her and in turn she likes to tease Bart. Their total different personalities is a main cause for their fights. They do love one another though neither likes to show it. In "Lisa on Ice" Bart becomes jealous of Lisa who is already superior in intellect to him, but then shows her great skills as a Goalie winning the affection of their father who treats her better then Bart. They always manage to reconcile despite their differences though. Bart has a buddy relationship with his youngest sibling Maggie, replacing Milhouse van Houten with her when he stopped being his friend and also fighting against Lisa to see who she loved more.

Bart is playable in the second level as he misses school to obtain a copy of Bonestorm 2, though eventually helping Professor Frink to build a Truckasaurus. Though he succeeds, he is abducted by aliens. In the third level, after Lisa spends time searching for him, he appears in the final mission on the C-Spanker ship, talking gibberish. He stays in his bedroom in the fourth level as Marge tries to find out what’s happened to him. By the fifth level, he has stopped talking gibberish (thanks to Marge’s efforts) and appears outside the Legitimate Businessman’s Social Club, helping Apu get to the museum. In the sixth level, Bart is once again playable. When characters use the Honor Roller in level seven, Bart appears in the car.
