He accepted the job at the plant because the job has big machines, something he likes. Despite having been hired just to play softball, he wanted to work instead. As a result, he was hospitalized because of radiation poisoning. Apparently, he not only recovered from the radiation poisoning, but the resulting radiation poisoning also endued him with "super-management powers."
