Mach Ridley is Grampa's friend from the Air Force.

History

After Homer spoiled many of the children's birthday parties, he was forced by the Springfield Birthday Merchants Association to organize one party for Rod Flanders. Homer hosted the event at the Springfield Museum of Flight where "Lulu", a B-17 flown by Mach Ridley, landed. Ridley was a WWII veteran and friend of Abe Simpson, and he was horrified when he saw the way Homer treated his father. Ridley and his veteran friends decided to teach Homer a lesson and forced him to finally make amends with Grampa.

Mach Ridley also appeared in one of Abe's stories when he was giving advice to Bart, as the boy had a crush on Annika Van Houten. Abe told Bart that sometimes you must do things you wouldn't ever do to get something, and gave the example of when he stole The "Won't Make It" fighter test plane in order to impress a bar waitress at a nearby bar named Sunny. The plane was supposed to be flown by Mach Ridley, but that would have meant Abe would have lost Mona to him.

Behind the Laughter

Mach Ridley trying to break the sound barrier is a reference both to USAF test pilot Jack Ridley and the Mach number.
