Fred Mertz is the landlord, neighbor and best friend of Ricky and Lucy Ricardo.

History

When Homer and Bart watched an episode of I Love Lucy with the volume turned way up, Lisa in her bedroom upstairs overheard some of the dialogue between Fred and Ricky about Ricky slapping Lucy.

Fred was on the same boat, The Che Gue-Ferry, as the Simpson family going to Cuba. He told Ricky Ricardo that the girls were dressed up like men trying to get into the cigar store. Ricky then told him to give them cigars. Fred then said that it will be good.

Behind the Laughter

• Fred Mertz is a character played by William Frawley in the TV sitcom I Love Lucy.
• In "Little Big Mom", Fred's line about Ricky hitting Lucy is heard again over the Gracie Films logo during the end credits.
