Dave is a patient at the New Bedlam Rest Home for the Emotionally Interesting. He is being treated for agoraphobia.
History
Dave had been working at an insurance company and was enjoying a very successful career, becoming the youngest vice-president in the firm's history. During a group therapy session at New Bedlam, Dave described the onset of his agoraphobia: "Then one Monday morning, I got up, I couldn't leave the house. I just couldn't."
Homer Simpson, also attending the session and oblivious to Dave's condition, asked Dave if the door was locked or if it was raining (thus explaining why Dave couldn't leave and couldn't face what was outside his house). Even after the nurse explained that Dave had agoraphobia and described the condition, Homer still didn't get it. When Dave said he couldn't make the long drive to work, Homer asked if his car was out of gas. The nurse gave Homer a dirty look, and Homer scoffed and called Dave a baby.
Behind the Laughter
Dave is a parody of the character Dale Harding played by Template:William Redfield in the movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
