The Patriarch is the boss of The Parson.
History
He came to see Reverend Lovejoy to talk to him about converting more people to Christianity and to fill the church up more. He told Lovejoy that he's in a slump and asked him how many people he had converted, to which Reverend Lovejoy replies "negative six". He then told Lovejoy that he has some converting to do.
