Mr. Bunny was a pet rabbit owned by the Flanders family. His backyard memorial service was spoiled as a result of Homer Simpson's bungling as Springfield's Sanitation Commissioner.
History
After Homer was elected Sanitation Commissioner, he blew through his department's entire annual budget in a month as a result of trying to keep promises he had made during the election campaign. To solve his budget crisis, Homer made deals with other cities, allowing them to dump their garbage in a mineshaft in the outskirts of Springfield in exchange for paying a fee. Homer's department was financially solvent again, but the volume of garbage crammed underground caused it to come to the surface anyplace where there was a hole in the ground -- such as on a golf green while Homer and Mayor Quimby were playing.
During this time, Mr. Bunny died and Ned, Rod and Todd buried him in their backyard. After the burial was complete, the three of them stood at the foot of the grave and Ned prayed, "Dear Lord, please take Mr. Bunny up to Heaven." Just then, the ground rumbled from the pressure of the garbage underground, and Mr. Bunny's corpse popped out of his freshly dug grave, to the horror of all three Flanderses.
