The Chain Boss is an officer in charge of a chain gang in Florida.
History
After the Simpsons supposedly killed Captain Jack, an alligator living in Palm Corners and symbol of the town, the family is forced to do penal labor in a chain gang. The Chain Boss was overseeing the workers, hitting them with a whip whenever necessary.
Behind the Laughter
The character parodies Boss Godfrey aka "The Man With No Eyes" (portrayed by Morgan Woodward), an abusive officer who controlled a chain gang in the 1967 cult movie Cool Hand Luke.
He is again referenced as the supervising guard of a prison work crew including Sideshow Bob in Springfield ("Black Widower", "Gone Boy").
