Personality
Bart is a underachieving, defiant and hyper active Ten-Year-Old boy who is proud of what he is. From birth Bart showed early signs of being a hell raiser, as we see when he sets his fathers tie on fire after he is born. Bart is a trouble maker and enjoys disrupting the normal routines at home and at school with his pranks that are at times very elaborate. He enjoys bothering others and shows a general ignorance to others feelings and what damage he could cause in his pranks, yet he is aware when he takes something to far and always tries to redeem himself in the end.
He is not technically dim-witted like Homer, but uninterested and has problems focusing his attention (He has Attention Deficit Disorder as revealed in "Brother's Little Helper") which is a main cause for his slow wits. In the instances where he does start to pay attention, like when he becomes Hall Monitor in "Separate Vocations" or when he takes Focusyn for his ADD, Bart shows more signs of intelligence and his grades improve though it never stays this way. Bart can display signs of problem solving despite his low intelligence, and with a little help of his sister Lisa Simpson at times, they have been able to solve many problems in Springfield. Together they have been able to foil several schemes concocted by Sideshow Bob, reunite Krusty the Klown with his father, often help along the love life of Seymour Skinner and Edna Krabapple, get Principal Skinner's job back after he was fired, Help Otto get his Drivers License, organize a special comeback episode for Krusty the Klown to put his show back on the air and many more. Bart is capable of learning several linguistics as he has shown. He has learned French, Spanish, Latin, Pig Latin, Japanese and Cantonese to date, though has not spoken them since the episode he learned them.
The Simpson family has a strained relationship, but Bart has the shakiest grounds with his family members. He has a turbulent connection with his father due to Bart's mischievousness and Homer's bad parenting skills and laziness. Bart refers to him as Homer instead of dad, and in turn Homer refers to Bart as 'The boy'. Bart also suffers parental abuse from Homer, who strangles him every time Bart angers him which is often. Homer also has pitted Bart against his sister Lisa several times for his affection. The two have much in common though and are able to bond with each other. Marge is more caring and nurturing to Bart. He is humiliated by her overwhelming motherly attention, then feels unloved in "Marge Be Not Proud" when after Bart is caught stealing she figures he is growing up and stops giving him so much attention. Both Homer and Marge love Bart despite the fact he is a hand full and a constant source of annoyance.
He has a sibling rivalry with his sister Lisa, and the two are at most times fighting verbally and physically. Bart likes to torture her and in turn she likes to tease Bart. Their total different personalities is a main cause for their fights. They do love one another though neither likes to show it. In "Lisa on Ice" Bart becomes jealous of Lisa who is already superior in intellect to him, but then shows her great skills as a Goalie winning the affection of their father who treats her better then Bart. They always manage to reconcile despite their differences though. Bart has a buddy relationship with his youngest sibling Maggie, replacing Milhouse van Houten with her when he stopped being his friend and also fighting against Lisa to see who she loved more.
