Poseidon is the god of the sea in Greek mythology. He is also called "Earth-Shaker", as he is also the god of earthquakes.
History
Zeus became angry with Odysseus when he refused to sacrifice one lamb in gratitude for his victory in the Trojan War. Odysseus then tried to sail home to Ithaca, but Zeus commanded Poseidon to delay his trip so that it ended up taking ten years. At one point, Odysseus and his crew had nearly reached Ithaca when Poseidon appeared in the form of a cloud, blew their ship all the way back to where it came from and then kept blowing, so that the ship wound up even further away from Ithaca than it had been when it first left Troy. After Poseidon did this, he was seen in Olympus chuckling and saying, "Arrr, ain't I a stinker."
Behind the Laughter
- Odysseus appears in the "D'oh, Brother Where Art Thou?" segment of "Tales from the Public Domain". The segment is a re-telling of the Odyssey with Joe Quimby cast in the role of Zeus, Homer as Odysseus and the Sea Captain as Poseidon.
