Shrek is an American animated media series based on the 1990 picture book Shrek! by William Steig. It follows Shrek, an ogre who lives in a swamp and becomes involved in various adventures alongside his friends, including Donkey and Princess Fiona. The franchise explores themes of friendship, love, acceptance, and the rejection of traditional fairy-tale conventions. It has expanded into numerous films, television specials, short films, stage productions, video games, and other merchandise.
Among its most notable installments are Shrek (2001), which introduced the main characters, Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007), and Shrek Forever After (2010). Other prominent adaptations include the Broadway musical Shrek the Musical, which premiered in 2008, and the spin-off film Puss in Boots (2011), followed by Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022). The franchise also includes television specials such as Shrek the Halls (2007) and Scared Shrekless (2010), which feature the characters in holiday-themed stories.
