Notes
- A production code is an identity for each and every Simpsons episodes assigned by the production team. Episodes are not often broadcast by their production order i.e. in numerical order.
- There are a small number of episodes that do not use the xFxx code nor the xABFxx. Rather, a xGxx code. Season 1 was the only season to use the xGxx prod. code as 7Gxx. It was hinted by James L. Brooks that the "7" with the code meant to indicate Homer Simpson's main job as a safety inspector, where he works at Sector 7G.
- Hold-over episodes mean episodes that aired on a succeeding season although was produced in an earlier season interval. E.g. if an episode was aired in Season 4 but had the 8Fxx production code (where the season used the succeeding production code, 9Fxx), then it is not technically produced for it and was produced for the previous season which in this case is Season 3. Reasons for hold-overs are unclear though it may be for the limit where seasons typically end in May where seasons could begin as late as December like Season 1.
- Season 10 marked the first use of the xABFxx production code, which is still used to this day. Unlike the first nine seasons where they utilized the xFxx prod. code where only the numbers changed (E.g. 9F15), the first interchangeable digit is a letter (E.g. AABF02), which progresses alphabetically. That is, Season 10's code being AABFxx, Season 11's code being BABFxx, Season 12's code being CABFxx, etc. Like most other prod. codes, the two interchangeable digits remain as numbers, which represent the number when an episode was produced.
- Season 18's prod. code is technically supposed to be IABFxx. This was deliberately skipped to JABFxx to avoid confusion as it could be see as the letter "I" could be seen as the number "1" as 1ABFxx where the letter is known as the number one in Roman numerals. A similar situation occurs with Season 23's production codes, which are techinally supposed to be OABFxx but has skipped over to PABFxx for the same reasons. This may occur when the production code reaches to SABFxx where the letter "S" would be mistaken as the digit "5".
- For reasons unknown, 6Fxx has never been used as a production code as it is supposedly left out as from Season 2 to 9, their respective production codes were 7Fxx to 5Fxx. 1Fxx would succeed 9Fxx. Had the 6Fxx code been used, Season 10's episodes would have used it where the debut of the xABFxx code would be at Season 11.
