It shows viewer-submitted video clips with voice-over narration (and occasionally sound effects) added for humorous effect. At the end of each episode, the top three clips (selected by producers) are voted on by the studio audience. The winner receives $10,000, while the first and second runners-up receive $3,000 and $2,000, respectively. The show spawned two spin-offs: America's Funniest People (abbreviated AFP), which aired from 1990 to 1994; and World's Funniest Videos, which aired in 1996.
AFV has had several hosts over the course of its run. First was Bob Saget, who hosted from 1989 to 1997 and remains strongly associated with the show in popular culture. The host with the longest tenure was Tom Bergeron, for fourteen television seasons (2001-2015). The current host is Alfonso Ribiero.
