On This Day in Springfield History, Part 1 is a The Simpsons Comic Strips story.

Synopsis[edit]

We see what happened on this day in Springfield history in the years 1959, 1973, 1981, and 2001.

Plot[edit]

On this day in 1959, after almost a month, Springfield officials remove the "decorative bunting and streamers" draped over the Jebediah Springfield statue when a citizen points out that it is actually toilet paper thrown there by town hooligans.

On this day in 1973, Springfield College graduate student John Frink announces his hypothesis that the atmosphere surrounding the giant gas planet Jupiter is identical to the atmosphere surrounding the Taco Mat. His findings are published in the "New England Journal of Astronomy" and "My Weekly Reader."

On this day in 1981, sworn in for his first term as mayor, Joseph "Diamond Joe" Quimby promises in his inaugural address to "restore dignity to Springfield and lift it from the squalid and degraded condition under which it now operates." He would make this same promise in each of his next five inaugural addresses.

On this day in 2001, Homer Simpson, Springfield's own Grammy-winning, nuclear safety engineer/astronaut/sanitation commissioner/farmer/labor leader/auto designer/bootlegger/monorail driver/vigilante/naval reservist/missionary/heretic/country musician manager/snow plow, sex tonic, and kitchen grease entrepreneur/bartender/celebrity assistant/mayoral bodyguard/clown/freak show star/cartoon voice actor/sports mascot/boxer/bowler/baseball player/big rig trucker/security guard/barbecue sculptor/accused murderer/world traveler/local boob, does nothing important, goes nowhere significant, and meets no one famous.
