The Burns Paradox is a The Simpsons Comic Strips story that was first published in 1998.

Synopsis[edit]

Mr. Burns is feeling bored and plays a game with Homer.

Plot[edit]

Mr. Burns is bored one day and tells Smithers that he wants to play a game. Smithers suggests Toxic Hide-and-Seek and One-Switch-Two-Switch-Let's-Flip-the-Blue-Switch, but Burns wants to play a new game instead, Unnecessary Dismissal. He calls Homer to his office and tells Homer that he's being fired for no good reason. Burns then holds out two pieces of paper, one that he says has a guillotine on it, and the other a yellow smiley face. If Homer chooses the face, he keeps his job and receives a raise. However, if he chooses the guillotine, he'd be dropped through a trap door with his hounds in. Unbeknownst to Homer, both papers have a guillotine on them.

One hour later, Homer is back at his station in Sector 7-G, and Burns is annoyed that Homer has won. A recording of Burns' office then shows what happened. Homer tripped on a white tiger rug and accidentally put the paper he chose into the shredder. Since Burns was holding the paper with the guillotine, Homer realized that he had won. Because Burns didn't want to admit to cheating, Homer got to keep his job and get a raise. He then knocked over a vase, which his raise covered the cost of.
